In a down economy, women’s health company announces growth
(WAYNE, PA) At a time
when industry retrenchment, lay-offs and
even bail outs dominate the news, a
specialty pharmaceutical company located
outside Philadelphia is experiencing growth.
This week, FemmePharma Global
Healthcare, Inc announces the establishment
of a new division, FemmePharma Mental
Healthcare, Central
Nervous System, that will focus on
central nervous system (CNS) disorders in
women.
“We are energized to
expand our commitment in women’s health
even at a time when the pharmaceutical
industry is retreating in this area,” says FemmePharma’s
President and CEO Gerianne Tringali DiPiano.
“For FemmePharma, these are times which
provide a wealth of opportunities in women’s
health.”
Since its establishment
in 1996, FemmePharma has focused on women’s
gynecological health issues, including urinary
incontinence and fibrocystic breast disease.
With its expansion into CNS, that focus
is growing to develop treatments particularly
for depression (including postpartum
depression), anxiety disorders, eating
disorders and neuropathic pain specific to
women.
“We know that women
respond differently than men to medications
for depression,” Tringali DiPiano says,
referring to a study published in 2006 in the
Journal of Affective Disorders.
“And this is just one example.
Understanding and developing treatments
that respond to women’s unique health
challenges is FemmePharma’s mission so our
expansion into CNS disorders in women
represents a natural progression,” Tringali
DiPiano says.
While FemmePharma
continues to invest and grow, the
pharmaceutical industry in general is
withdrawing.
In April of this year, a Wall Street
Journal website estimated that as many as
25,000 pharmaceutical jobs were expected to be
eliminated in 2008.
And in October, Wyeth announced that it
would eliminate discovery work in women’s
health while reducing its therapeutic areas
from 14 to six.
Tringali DiPiano says
this represents a concern for her personally
while providing an exciting opportunity for
her company.
“The gap in developing
treatments unique to women is widening even
though there are significant unmet needs,”
Tringali DiPiano says.
“Without question our expansion into
CNS is an indication of our continued growth
and commitment to women and their unique
health needs.”
The women’s health sector
represents an estimated $116 billion market by
the year 2010, according to a report by
Research and Markets.com.

Novel Investigational Drug May Help The 26 Million American Women Suffering From Breast Pain
--Clinical Trial for Fibrocystic Breast Disease Being Conducted Nationwide--
WAYNE, PA – June 27, 2007—A clinical trial for a much needed
treatment option for pain associated with fibrocystic breast disease, is
in progress nationwide. The severely debilitating symptoms such as
breast pain, affects about 26 million women in the United States alone
but is often left untreated leaving women feeling hopeless.
As many as 50% of American women talk to their physician about breast
pain including swelling, tenderness and lumps that increase prior and
during menstruation and may continue for several days. The pain is not
only physical. Psychological stress is often associated with undergoing
mammograms, ultrasound scans and breast biopsies, techniques frequently
utilized by physicians to rule out other diseases of the breast.
“Breast pain associated with fibrocystic breast disease can be
physically impairing, leaving women unable to cope with basic daily
functions, yet 85% of women don’t receive treatment,” said Gerianne
Tringali DiPiano, President and CEO of FemmePharma Global Healthcare,
the company sponsoring the study. “We hope news of this trial will
compel women with breast pain associated with fibrocystic breast disease
who have been previously diagnosed to seek a study center in their
area.”
Physicians at centers nationwide will enroll women who have breast
pain associated with fibrocystic breast disease.
“The trial allows us to assess a new dosage form of an active
pharmaceutical ingredient with a demonstrated safety and efficacy
profile. We expect that the new dosage forms will provide a new
treatment option for this very important disease state,” added Bruce J.
Levine MD, FACOG, and investigator of the trial.

About Breast Pain Associated with Fibrocystic Breast Disease
Breast pain can impair a woman’s ability to work, participate in her
daily activities, embrace a child or have an intimate relationship with
her partner. In addition, breast pain frequently causes increased
anxiety and stress in a woman’s life as a result of dealing with pain
each month.
Approximately 15% of women who experience breast pain require
prescription medication. Currently there is only one FDA approved
prescription medication for pain associated with fibrocystic breast
disease. However, this medication typically produces unwanted systemic
side effects, which often causes women to stop their necessary
treatment. In many cases, women are sent home and told to ice their
breasts or purchase a tighter fitting brassiere leaving them feeling
hopeless.
About FemmePharma Global Healthcare, Inc.
FemmePharma Global Healthcare, Inc. is committed to improving the health
of women and is exploring an innovative, investigational drug that
provides adequate relief with minimal unwanted side effects for women
suffering from pain associated with fibrocystic breast disease.
Founded in 1996, FemmePharma Global Healthcare is focused on
developing safe and effective drugs minimizing or eliminating the side
effects associated with many drug therapies by designing treatments in a
way that suits the female anatomy and physiology. The company has
already scored great success in the development of a treatment for
endometriosis through Phase 2. As a result, KV Pharmaceuticals bought
the global rights and continues its development of the product.
Other current endeavors include a product to treat urinary
incontinence in Phase 2 clinical trials, and products to treat
dysmenorrhea and dysfunctional uterine bleeding in preclinical
development.

FemmePharma Global Healthcare, Inc. Opens Investigational New Drug Application for Treatment of Breast Pain
Wayne, PA…FemmePharma Global Healthcare, Inc., a suburban Philadelphia-based pharmaceutical company focusing on developing treatments for diseases and disorders suffered by women opened an Investigational New Drug application for the treatment of breast pain. Clinical trials are expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2006.
The development of a treatment to alleviate breast pain comes at the heels of the company’s previous success at developing a treatment that lessens the severe discomfort caused by endometriosis. FemmePharma Global Healthcare developed its treatment for endometriosis using a unique, patented platform technology that eliminates systemic side effects by concentrating a small but effective amount of the drug directly to a targeted area of the disease or disorder.
The company is now engineering its patented platform technology to develop a topical cream to treat breast pain because side effects caused by the few current treatment options are seriously objectionable. “If a women goes to her physician today for medication to help relieve breast pain she likely will be faced with several inferior choices: an FDA-approved prescription medication that typically causes unpalatable side effects like facial hair growth, weight gain and acne; or an over-the-counter pain reliever that does not address the underlying causes of breast pain,” said Gerianne Tringali DiPiano, President and CEO of FemmePharma Global Healthcare.
“The lack of an effective and safe treatment for breast pain is why FemmePharma Global Healthcare has developed a convenient, topical treatment that should diminish side effects and achieve efficacy,” added Dr. Peter Mays, Vice President, Pharmaceutical Development of FemmePharma Global Healthcare.
On the whole, breast pain is a widespread problem. Roughly 26 million women complain of the disorder, and about 15 percent of women experience symptoms severe enough to warrant medication. Breast pain remains seriously debilitating and can cause its victims to miss work, withdraw from everyday activities, and recoil from intimacy. Sometimes the pain is so severe that a woman may even avoid hugging her children.
FemmePharma Global Healthcare’s efforts to create an effective treatment that yields no harmful side effects could offer long-awaited relief for those women who suffer sharp, stabbing, burning, chronic pain.
According to Tringali DiPiano, female patients are often given cursory, ineffective advice on how to cope with the pain or are treated as if the disorder is a phantom pain. “Breast pain produces stress and anxiety as women are concerned about the underlying causes of the pain. Even more concerning, breast pain is a leading reason why physicians overprescribe mammography for young women,” said Tringali DiPiano.

Baltimore Native Returns to Her Roots Seeking Investors and Investigators for New Drug Protocol
Wayne, PA…FemmePharma Global Healthcare, Inc., a Philadelphia-area pharmaceutical company that focuses on developing treatments for diseases and disorders suffered by women, is reaching out to investors and investigators in the Baltimore area to discuss its new treatment for breast pain. The company recently was given permission by the FDA to open an Investigational New Drug (IND) Application to commence a Phase 2 clinical trial. FemmePharma president and CEO, Gerianne Tringali DiPiano, who was born and raised in suburban Baltimore and is the daughter of an accomplished Baltimore area entrepreneur, Joseph C. Tringali, is targeting the region because of the accelerated growth of bioscience companies and the state’s increasingly favorable entrepreneurial climate. Now that the company’s IND is open, clinical trials should begin by the fourth quarter of 2006 and the company will be seeking medical talent and subjects from Baltimore.
Maryland: A Biotech Industry Leader
“Maryland, and the Baltimore region specifically, are biotech hotspots offering an abundance of talent,” stresses Tringali DiPiano. A 2004 study prepared by the Milken Institute ranked Maryland second in the nation for biopharmaceutical innovations. With more than 300 biotech companies and an annual payroll of $2.1 billion, Maryland is on the bioscience fast track. “I am confident that this region is the right place to begin clinical trials. As the epicenter of biotech activity, FemmePharma will have access to office space, laboratories, manufacturing, employees and expertise, factors that are critical to furthering FemmePharma’s research interests,” added Tringali DiPiano.
A Therapy to Improve Human Health

CROSSING THE DELAWARE TO WOO INVESTORS & INVESTIGATORS
Pharmaceutical Company Searches for “HOT” Biotech Climate
Wayne, PA…FemmePharma Global Healthcare, Inc., a Philadelphia-area pharmaceutical company that focuses on developing treatments for diseases and disorders suffered by women, is reaching out to investors and investigators in New Jersey to discuss its new treatment for breast pain. The company was recently given permission by the FDA to open an Investigational New Drug (IND) Application. Now that the company’s IND is open, clinical trials should begin by the fourth quarter of 2006 and the company will be seeking medical talent and subjects from New Jersey.
New Jersey: Leading the Industry
According to Tringali DiPiano, “New Jersey is on its way to becoming a biotech hotspot.” A 2004 BIO-Batelle Study, a comprehensive analysis that quantifies the scope and impact of bioscience employment in all 50 states, noted that “New Jersey has nurtured the key factors that appear to influence a state's ability to grow bioscience employment. These include the degree of involvement by research institutions, available capital, access to facilities and equipment, a stable and supportive tax and regulatory environment and a long-term perspective.” Tringali DiPiano added, “I am confident that this region is the right place to begin clinical trials. As the epicenter of biotech activity, FemmePharma will have access to office space, laboratories, manufacturing, employees and expertise --- factors that are critical to furthering FemmePharma’s research interests.”
